Food Delivery to Just-in-Time-Delivery

5th Aug'20 was a special day for us.

Our journey that began in April with delivering food to a nearby community in HSR as part of COVID relief measure, continued to 'Just In Time Delivery'.

A young pregnant lady Tanya, (name changed) was in the second trimester of her pregnancy in April when we first met her, we chatted up with her frequently during our visits and helped take care of her scan and a bit of additional nutrition during her pregnancy, with her due date being the second week of Aug'20.

On the 5th Aug'20 around 2 pm, she called and she asked "Didi when are you all coming to meet us" and I replied that we would come over the weekend, she seemed quite fine with it.

In another couple of hours, things changed, by 4:30 pm her labour pain had begun. Fortunately, her neighbour Shakku (name changed),  a  mother of 3 kids took charge and started helping Tanya.  She gave her hot water massage, calmed her and fed "Ganji" - rice porridge, while Tanya's daughter was busy playing in Shakku's house.

By 6 pm we received an SOS call to help her.  We visited their house and enquired with her husband and neighbours where would they like us to take her for her delivery. As the hospital she was visiting for her checkups was converted into a COVID care centre, we called other private hospitals and were told that the delivery charges would be Rs 40000/-. Tanya's husband mentioned that he had absolutely no money as he worked as a helper and was jobless for the last 10 days. We collectively decided to take her to Singasandra Govt Maternity Hospital. Shakku packed a few cloth pieces, a bedspread and some cutlery.

Driving carefully over road humps and potholes with Tanya moaning in pain all through, at around 7 pm we reached the Singasandra maternity hospital.  The nurse in-charge who examined her told us that she would deliver in about 2 hours if all went well.  Shortly, there was a power outage in the hospital and we were asked to shift to Chandapura / Huskur or Jayanagar Govt hospital as there were no signs of power returning.  We had no choice but to shift Tanya to another hospital.  After several rounds of discussion, she was shifted to Jayanagar Government Maternity Hospital by the Govt ambulance while we followed them in our vehicle and reached the hospital by 8:15 pm. The COVID situation helped this time as we could drive past the dreaded Silk Board junction and reach the hospital in less than 30 minutes.

The would-be mother was immediately shifted to the labour room, in the next few minutes, she delivered a BABY BOY.  We wondered if the term 'Just in time delivery' was coined because of similar situations.

The Jayanagar Govt Hospital is quite spacious, neat and clean, with nice and friendly staff. The nanny who helped deliver was kind enough to give us inputs on how to handle, what to feed the mother etc. Shakku decided to stay back that night, despite being a single parent of 3 children.  Shakku has a big heart and one cannot thank her enough for her selfless work. This truly shows community spirit at work, with people stepping in to help each other in spite of their difficulties and the risks involved.

We spoke to Shakku the next morning, who informed us that she bought some clothes for the baby and mother and both were doing fine. The mother along with the baby were ready for discharge by noon. Thanks to the benefits of the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) they came back home safely along with husband and Shakku in the Govt. provided ambulance.

We sincerely appreciate the hospital staff for their selfless service amid this COVID conditions around.  They had admitted Tanya without any initial tests as this was an emergency.

An unplanned situation for us, this was a new experience for us as compared to helping this community with COVID relief. We were glad that there were very few hiccups and everything went well.  We visited them and met the happy family.

                                                                 The happy family!

                                               With Shakku - the Saviour!
